In this clip, the attacker, in an offside position, is in the goal area, close to the path of the ball and clearly interfering with the goalkeeper.

 

Where there is doubt, the AR is correct to allow the play to reach a natural conclusion. (i.e. “goal”)

 

In such instances, the AR should over the communication system ask the referee for a face to face discussion regarding the incident to avoid any potential misunderstandings.

 

Both the AR and the Referee should be concentrated in such instances and be mindful of the clear UEFA guidance that instances such as this should be penalised as an offside offence.

 

The incorrect decision to award the goal leads to an avoidable Red Card for the home manager.
